Here is my latest batch of things you can repair or maintain around your home in 15 minutes or less, really!
Unclogging a sink or tub drain:
The number one reason for a clogged drain is hair. I am not a big fan of chemicals in a drain, they do work but are not a long term solution and when not properly used can damage your plumbing system.
Enter the Drain Claw. Here is a simple device that I should have invented. It is inexpensive, easy to use and removes all the hair that is clogging your drain. It is basically a coated wire about 24” long with a hook/loop end. You insert the wire into the drain turn it a few times and pull it out slowly. You will be amazed and grossed out at the same time. It costs about $6.00 and can be found at hardware stores or at www.badcatsolutions.com
More Power from your shower:
A clogged shower head can restrict the flow of water while you’re bathing and make the whole experience less enjoyable. A few simple turns of a pair of channel locks removes the head from the shower arm. From there you can soak the shower head in cleaners like CLR, Lime Away, or good old fashion Vinegar. Let the head sit in the bowl or bucket for a half an hour. Then use a nylon scrub brush to remove any scale from the head. Then rinse and return to the arm and remember to use some Teflon tape around the threads to make a tight seal. Now if all this cleaning still does not give you the results you are looking for then you may want to consider a new shower head. I tried two new ones recently that are worth a look. The new Kohler Katalyst shower head has air induction. It feels great almost like seltzer water spraying on you, very invigorating. It retails for about $60.00 and you can learn more at www.kohler.com you can also look at the Moen Refresh unit. This unit has a large rain head and hand spray attachment. The retail on this unit is $60.00 and you can go to www.moen.com for more information.
Re-seal your stone counters:
I love natural stone I really think it is one of the best choices for counters in your home. But you must remember to care of it correctly. By using the proper products you will have a clean surface that’s streak free and will maintain the finish. The real trick is to keep the counters sealed. Stone Care International www.stonecare.com makes a do-it-yourself sealer that is easy and effective. Once the counter top is clean, touch up any joint areas with a clear silicone caulk. GE makes a product called Caulk Singles that is perfect for touch ups. They are like juice bags of caulk with about 2-3 ounces of material. Allow that to dry over night. Then on your way out the door, wipe off the counters and then spray the sealer on the entire surface. You will notice that it begins to evaporate near the edges first. Apply a second coat and allow to dry for about 3 hours before you put things back. This process will protect your stone top for at least 18 months.
